TouchMath

At Evans Literacy Associates, we believe that strong numeracy skills begin with a solid foundation in math principles. That’s why we use the TouchMath® program. TouchMath is an explicit, multisensory math program for students who struggle with key foundational math skills and abstract concepts from preschool through eighth grade. The TouchMath Solution is the only math program that uses the numeral itself as a manipulative. Using TouchNumerals and TouchPoints with explicit and systematic math instruction lets students see, touch, say, and hear math in a whole new way. The TouchMath approach brings the Concrete–Representational–Abstract (CRA) continuum into practice, ensuring that students master concrete concepts before transitioning to representational and abstract thinking.

How does Numeracy Support fit with ELA's Literacy focus?

Numeracy is often described as mathematical literacy because both concepts emphasize the ability to understand, apply, and communicate mathematical concepts effectively in real-world contexts. Just as literacy enables individuals to read, write, and interpret language, numeracy empowers them to confidently reason with numbers, solve problems, and make informed decisions.

Dyscalculia is a learning difficulty that impacts about 7% of the population in the United States. Dyscalculia affects a person's ability to understand and work with numbers. Just as dyslexia impacts reading and language skills, dyscalculia affects mathematical skills. It is sometimes referred to as "math dyslexia," though the two are distinct conditions.

Our Numeracy Support will emphasize enhancing the following:

1. Math Fluency (the efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility needed to perform calculations and solve problems effectively)

2. Conceptual Understanding (Math fluency is a pre-requisite. Students will be able to apply math skills to real life situations.)

3. Developing Problem Solving and Critical Thinking Skills (How and when to use certain strategies to solve complex problems)

4. Math Discourse (Student must be able to explain their reasoning orally and in writing)
